The City of San Francisco has dismissed the Golden State Warriors before, prior to their settling in Oakland – just as they have forced out the residents of the Fillmore and Midtown – so the City’s interest in and support for black excellence seems to only apply when the price is right.
Black San Franciscans are making moves to support their sister city of Oakland instead of rewarding greedy Silicon Valley elites. According to Good Neighbor Coalition founder Allen Jones, the Warriors’ relocation is political racism. After all, the lower-income black community of Oakland has been the backbone of the Warriors’ fanbase for 46 years – now, that genuine joy and economic spark is being ripped out by wealthy San Franciscans.
Jones, a longtime San Franciscan and Warriors fan, received 98,000 votes in support of keeping the Warriors in Oakland. He’s also astutely commented on the difference between City and citizen: “I know San Franciscans… the Warriors move is not in the spirit of San Francisco. It is in the spirit of City Hall though.”
